I was enrolled into Sea Survival Course by the Company on the second day of work. Sea Survival Course is a 3 days course that helps to prepare you for any offshore works. During those 3 days course, the participants will be trained to react properly if any emergency occurs during an offshore job, such as fire and helicopter crash.

Those were my classmates during the training. Though I was the only girl, my classmates were a bunch of crazy people. We were all on the same level of craziness and I had lots of laughs during my training.
The first day was about fire and how to escape during an occurrence of fire. We were brought into what they call a ’smoke house’. Assuming the building (smoke house) was on fire, we need to find our way out of the building. REAL FIRE was lighted. REAL SMOKE was generated. Of course, we had our masks on la, kalau tak confirm dah pengsan hidu asap.
The second day was FUN. We had the Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET). Us before we were dripping wet (points at picture below).

And this is the helicopter simulator.

And this, was yours truly coming breathing using the EBS (Emergency Breathing System).

Helicopters are used to transport employees from the shores to the rig. HUET teaches us how to respond when the helicopter that we are boarded on suddenly crashes. There are 2 types of crash; controlled landing and uncontrolled landing. Controlled landing happens when the pilot manage to land safely on water when there’s a failure on the helicopter. On the other hand, uncontrolled landing occurs when the helicopter crashes and falls into the sea, trapping the boaders inside.
During the simulation, we were trained how to escape when controlled and uncontrolled landing occurs, with or without an EBS. I don’t think I am good in explaining, check out this video to watch the HUET simulation.
On the third day, we had the sea survival practical. Imagining if there’s fire on the rig or platform and there’s nothing we can do about it, the only way out is to jump into the sea. Our training on that day was basically about that. About jumping into water and waiting for help to come.

This is called the hurdle position. When waiting for rescue, everyone should hurdle together in this manner and head counts are done. This is to ensure that no one will be separated from the group.
Then, let’s say rescue boat finally comes, this is how we climb up to safety.

Mind you, a wet coverall feels so heavy!
Climbing up the ladder. Assuming my charming prince finally came to rescue me using a helicopter. HAHA.

Ini pula dipanggil life boat. Iaitu boat yang dugunakan untuk menyelamatkan orang. (Ok, suddenly BM).

Again, mari main assume assume. For this one, assuming a rescue helicopter is on top, and they can’t drop the ladder down unto us. So they had to use this method to rescue us (picture di bawah).

That thingy will support us and lift us up to safety.

For the best part of the Sea Survival Course, watch this video. It’s my awesome 30ft jump.
After the 3 days training has been completed, we were awarded a certificate and a safety passport which allows us to go offshore. I really enjoyed this course and sudah pasti after 3 years, I will be going back again because my safety passport needs to be renewed every 3 years.
